Hiking
Hiking is the best way to experience the wonders of the stunning mountainous areas of Tanzania and to absorb the wonderful nature and beautiful views.
Whether you set foot on the summits of Tanzania’s highest mountains or just walk through the lush forests on the lower slopes for a few hours – trekking in this country offers something for everyone and Banana Farm can organize it all. Volcanoes, high plateaus and mountain ranges, lakes and craters offer superb possibilities for short hikes or long treks.
What you should know
Tanzania mountains vary in height, location, climate etc. Kilimanjaro which is the highest mountain in Africa have attracted many climbers from around the globe. Mount Meru (4566m.) and Ol Donyo Lengai (active volcano) are also popular.
Each mountain is unique and this makes it important to be well informed before deciding which one to climb. In Tanzania, most climbers opt for Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. Meru is Africa’s fifth highest peak with fabulous views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Momela Lakes from the summit. The challenging ascent to the crater of Ol Donyo Lengai passes through some fantastic scenery with panoramic views of the Rift Valley. The trek to the top of Lengai is very steep and a true challenge which is attempted only by hikers with good level of fitness.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Without a doubt, Tanzania’s best-known mountain and also the highest mountain in Africa is Mt Kilimanjaro with its peak at 5,895 m. There are six official climbing routes to the top and trekking durations vary from 5 to 10 days. We specialize in four of the six routes: Marangu, Machame, Lemosho and Rongai.
Mount Meru
Mt Meru is located in Arusha National Park. Mt Meru’s peak rises to a height of 4,566m and is only 80km away from Mt Kilimanjaro. The mountain slopes offer natural shelter to numerous animal species such as elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, baboons, colobus monkeys and antelopes, making your trek an adventurous one therefore, a park ranger will accompany you for your safety. Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain in Africa and the second highest in Tanzania. Meru is often used as warm-up hiking in preparation for Kilimanjaro.
What other mountains to hike around Tanzania?
Other mountains in northern Tanzania that you can go hiking are Mt Lomalasin (3,648m), Mt Hanang (3,417m), Ol Doinyo Lengai (2,878m) and Mt Longido (2,637m). The rest are Usambara Mountains in Lushoto, Mt. Lemagrut, Mt. Lolmalasin, Mt Oldean, Uluguru Mountains, etc.
